5th Incheon Women Artists Biennale

“Terra Incognita”

01.10. – 30-10.2011

Artistic Director: Jane Farver

Jane Farver, former Director of the List Visual Arts Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1999 to May, 2011 and Director of Exhibitions at the Queens Museum of Art in New York from 1992 to 1999, is an independent curator in New York. She is the first foreign curator to serve as its Artistic Director.

“For the Incheon Women Artists Biennale, I would like to explore the concept of multi and parallel universes in regard to contemporary international art. The many layers of meaning, metaphors, and possibilities the concept offers make it an elastic theme appropriate for an exhibition such as this”, says Jane Farver.

This year’s edition features “Terra Incognita” in the Main section that exclusively invites women artists from Korea and abroad; “In the Wake of 2013” in the Tuning section that showcases diverse works of both male and female artists from Korea and abroad; and “Alone Together” in the Participation section that offers the opportunity of a one-person show to Korean woman artists who actively work in diverse art fields. In addition, an international symposium and a number of panels are being planned for the first week of the biennial to provide a venue for a wider discussion on women’s art in the landscape of contemporary art.

The 5th Incheon Women Artists Biennale (01.10. – 30-10.2011) will take place at Incheon Arts and Culture Center along with three other venues, The Museum of Korea Emigration History, Bupyeong Arts Center, and Incheon Educational and Cultural Center for Students during the month of October.
