The idea for POLAND Biennale came to life in 2007, but it was not until the meeting with representatives of various art centres, which took place in Poland during Mediations Biennale 2010, that it acquired its present shape.

The author of the Poland Biennale idea, Tomasz Wendland, explains:

“We continue a 20 -year -old tradition of a movement called ‘Live Gallery’, which initially connected together authors’ galleries; which were run in most cases by artists. At the moment, some of these people are in charge of public institutions, or they are responsible for various art events.

Our actions should be viewed as an attempt to develop co-operation amongst various art centres in Poland in order to stimulate and create an image of contemporary art in our country. We also aspire to promote it internationally. On 20th November 2010 in Poznan, a document entitled POLAND BIENNALE AGREEMENT was signed.”
