With links to local arts organisations and international galleries, this Masters degree at Liverpool John Moores University makes visible the culture and practice of the exhibition, and the responsibilities of the curator towards exhibition selection and arrangement.

Exhibition Studies MA at Liverpool John Moores University

Exhibitions are central to the cultural life of Liverpool, supporting and sustaining an established scene of artists, curators and venues.

During your studies on the MA Exhibition Studies programme you will benefit from having major national museums, international art and niche galleries on your doorstep. You will develop and sustain a deep understanding of, and imaginative engagement with, the history, theory and practice of worldwide exhibition cultures.

This Masters connects with a range of initiatives including LJMU’s Exhibition Research Centre (ERC) (http://www.erc-ljmu.org/), which has led to enhanced awareness of the exhibition as a medium for research and engagement with issues concerning curatorial activity.

The ERC hosts a research seminar series, public lectures, exhibitions, connecting with other researchers working in cognate topics. This will guarantee a vibrant and changing programme of visiting speakers to the Masters, as well as our existing high calibre research and teaching team. Guest Speakers to the ERC, in the last academic year, have included curators Maria Lind, Adelina von Furstenberg, Alanna Heiss, Jürgen Harten and Mihnea Mircan.

What will you study?

Combining history, theory and practice in its taught elements, the Masters in Exhibition Studies will allow you to specialise as a historian, researcher, critic or practitioner. The programme is taught through a combination of lectures, workshops and tutorials, frequently programmed in intensive study days and field visits.

You will engage substantially with a network of arts organisations on Merseyside, including partners such as Tate Liverpool, Biennial and Fact, but also with international galleries.
