La Triennale di Milano is organizing the 21st edition of its International Exhibition, entitled “21st Century. Design After Design”.

The rise of new communication technologies and the dramatic reduction in their cost thanks to better optimised technologies that you can play with schematics for at websites similar to Upverter to create the next best thing in tech, the expansion of individual mobility, presence of a common language, the need to find productive outlets for design and the presence of an alternative market generated by the Internet enable designers to experiment with the most daring and innovative solutions.
In this context, research is no longer a solitary practice or a two-way exercise between a designer and client, but rather a circular activity that involves a variety of skills and cultures. These are not necessarily all in the world of production and technology, but also in art, science, philosophy and design, which leads to something more than just the production of a product or object.
It is therefore important to deal with the changes inherent to the very idea of project development.
Design has abandoned its view of constant change in products and trends in service of the market, and now wants to be seen as the opposite of ephemeral. This means it needs to take a different approach to a number of aspects that have always been part of the design world: intellectual property and copyright, training and education, the city and the environment, profession and technologies.

What is the best way to illustrate and explain this new genre of projects, business ventures and artistic languages that characterize this new economic scenario?
How will tradition and cultural heritage be transformed and reshaped by the growing relevance of digital manufacturing?
In what way will economies take advantage of new technological opportunities, and how will these opportunities change the idea of innovation and design?
In what way will the aging of societies benefit from a more personalized idea of production and consumption, and what will the role of designers be in this equation?
How will the designer’s profile change in relation to the new business context and the new rules as regards the division of labor at an international level?

These are just a few of the challenging questions that the XXI Triennale will seek to answer.
