The Boda Boda project is the Open Call section of the festival where all visual artists in Uganda get the chance to participate in a travelling art exhibition, which will take place around Kampala during the festival month of October.

Deadline for submissions: July 7, 2014

20 Ugandan artists will be selected to work with one boda boda each to create a newly commissioned artwork which will be showcased to the public. The festival boda bodas will move together each morning from the KLA ART 014 exhibition space to a different pre-selected location in Kampala’s city centre. There, they will form a temporary public art exhibition where volunteers will be on hand to engage members of the public by explaining the project and the artworks.

Included in the Boda Boda Project is the option to be part of KLA ART 014’s Open Studios Network. KLA ART 014 will create a map of all the artist studio spaces in Kampala and encourage a diverse range of audiences to visit artist studios. The work shown in the Open Studios does not have to relate to the Unmapped theme and you have the option of selling your artwork to visitors with 0% commission.

More about the theme: UNMAPPED
UNMAPPED explores the social setting of Kampala and its neighbouring countries’ cities, including Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Kigali, Dar-es-Salaam, Kinshasa and Juba. It looks at how changes in the political and economic landscape influence or inspire a creativity of survival in those inhabitants of the unplanned areas of the city.

A creativity of survival is seen, for example, in the bicycle knife-sharpeners; in the express fashion designers who produce work in a few hours; in the mobile nail salons who use portable stools and can set up anywhere; in the creation of smaller towns and alternative markets outside of the capital city. KLA ART 014 aims to reflect on how people adapt creatively in the city by noting their journey and their successes.
