ICI and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics collaborate on curator, Ingrid Schaffner’s presentation on the Carnegie International, 57th Edition, 2018, on view at the Carnegie Museum of Art from October 13, 2018 to March 25, 2019. After her presentation, she will be joined in conversation with Carin Kuoni, Director and Curator of the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School and Carnegie International Travel Companion.

With 32 artists and artist collectives, the exhibition invites visitors to explore what it means to be “international” at this moment in time, and to experience museum joy. The pleasure of being with art and other people inspired the composition of this International—a series of encounters with contemporary art inside the world of Carnegie Museum of Art.

In 2016, Schaffner embarked on five major research trips. She said her “approach was to invite five curators to each accompany [her] on one major trip to someplace new to both of [them]. The Companions, as the curators are called, contributed the trajectories of their own research and interests to shaping an overall itinerary that is at once serendipitous and specific.” Schaffner traveled to Morocco, Senegal, and Lagos with Carin Kuoni, Director, The Vera List Center for Art and Politics, The New School, New York.

Ingrid Schaffner is an American curator, art critic, writer, and educator, specializing in contemporary art. She is currently at work on the Carnegie International, 57th Edition, 2018 which will be on view from October 13, 2018 to March 25, 2019 at Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. From 2000 to 2015, Schaffner directed the exhibition program at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the leading museums dedicated to exhibiting the innovative art of our time. Her many significant monographic and thematic exhibitions have brought attention to under-recognized artists and little-explored themes and practices in the art world.

Carin Kuoni is Director/Curator of the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School.  Under her directorship, the Vera List Center has developed into an internationally recognized public think tank and research lab on the role of the arts in fostering new modes of civic engagement. Kuoni curates a dynamic program of interdisciplinary public lectures, conferences, performances, and panel discussions focusing on themes of political urgency and broad resonance. An art historian by education and a curator and critic by practice, Kuoni was previously director of exhibitions at Independent Curators International (ICI) and director of the Swiss Institute New York. She has curated many international exhibitions, among them The Puppet Show (2008–2009, with Ingrid Schaffner), Vogue’ology (2010, with Arbert Santana Evisu and Robert Sember) and Post-Speculation (2014, with Prem Krishnamurthy). Kuoni is a founding member of the artists’ collective REPOhistory and director of SITAC XII in Mexico (2015).
