Changes at Biennial Foundation.

Rafal Niemojewski

We have some exciting news that we would like to share with you!

Effective June 2015, Rafal Niemojewski succeeds Marieke van Hal as Director of Biennial Foundation.

Rafal Niemojewski is an experienced cultural producer based in New York. He earned his doctorate from the Royal College of Art, London on the proliferation of the contemporary biennial. He has an innate understanding of the field; its practice, theory and discourse. Rafal Niemojewski began working with Biennial Foundation in 2009 and joined the organization as Deputy Director in 2014.

With this new appointment there is also a strategic change of direction for Biennial Foundation.

In its first five years, Biennial Foundation facilitated a stronger connection and exchange amongst biennials and biennial practitioners worldwide. One of its biggest accomplishments to date was acting as catalyst and facilitator in the process of forming a new professional association for biennials, the IBA – International Biennial Association, founded in 2014.

Building up on the sucess of the first two editions of the World Biennial Forum – a conference organized by Biennial Foundation – with its distinguished partners, in Gwangju (2012) and São Paulo (2014), the organization is now directing its efforts towards research, discourse, advocacy and diversity. Biennial Foundation aims to provide strategic vision and thought leadership for the biennial community, foster the research and professional training in the field, and continue to promote biennials worldwide.

We look forward to this new, exciting phase, and are thrilled and confident that Rafal Niemojewski will take this challenge head-on advancing our new mission and goals.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank those who have contributed to what Biennial Foundation has achieved to date and look forward to the many years to come.
